Compact Automation Solution for doTERRA
Radial Europe is a leading third-party logistics provider (3PL) for e-commerce serving different areas within the value chain, from fulfillment to value-added services and transport. In each aspect, Radial always has the same priority: providing first-class service for their customers. Radial lived up to their standards with the new automated system constructed near Warsaw, Poland, which started operation in 2022.
The system was designed for doTERRA, a world-leading provider of essential oils, skincare products, supplements, diffusers and health products, which are sold through their online shop, doTERRA.com.
In an area measuring 3,000 m² (32,300 ft²), KNAPP built an intelligent, compact automation solution for the lifestyle company that was tailored to meet the unique requirements of doTERRA and Radial. The main feature of the efficient logistics solution is the high-performance A-frame automated picking system, which can process up to 23,000 orders per day.

Efficient logistics solution with automated picking system
1) A-frame replenishment
Individual doTERRA items are stored in flow racks. Items are removed from the flow racks to replenish the A-frames for picking.
2) Automatic picking
Empty containers are conveyed to the heart of the solution, the Central Belt System. Here, the SDA A-frame picks fast movers onto the central belt, from which they are dropped into empty containers, a highly efficient and precise order fulfillment process. The SDA picking system picks fast-moving products with defined characteristics – namely cuboid or cylindrical items, such as doTERRA’s essential oils and skin care products.
3) Manual picking
After picking is completed at the SDA A-frame, containers are transported onward to the manual picking stations where slow movers and items such as diffusers that are not suited to the SDA are picked using our Pick-to-Light solution. The Pick-to-Light system guides workers through the manual picking process efficiently and with ease, increasing the quality of order fulfillment.
4) Shipping
After documents are inserted automatically and the orders are packed into packages, the packages are automatically labeled with shipping labels and dangerous goods labels. The shipping sorter sorts the packages through different shipping ramps before they are sent to one of 30 countries.

The automated picking system for fully automated order fulfillment
The core technology of the compact automation solution is the Central Belt System, featuring KNAPP SDA ejector technology. The fully automatic picking system for processing fast movers could be adapted to meet Radial’s individual requirements for doTERRA thanks to its high modularity and scalability. The Central Belt System consists of 12 modules with 768 channels for 285 SKUs, which are replenished manually.
The A-frame automatically ejects the items needed for an order onto the central belt, which conveys them into an empty container at a transfer station. The SDA can pick a total of 86 percent of order lines at doTERRA, which makes this automated picking system the absolute highlight of the system for both doTERRA and their 3rd party logistics provider Radial and is what makes the compact automation solution so efficient.
The SDA significantly raises our daily volumes and productivity.
