Ensuring maximum availability, system stability and IT security for our customers worldwide is the main job of an IT service administrator. But what exactly does that involve? Find out more in this interview or in this video!
Keeping systems up to date and highly available is not only important for increasing a system’s performance, but also for keeping it safe in our digitalized world, where the repercussions of a cyberattack can have dimensions you’d never dream of – from reputation loss to operation downtime, not to mention the financial costs of repairing the damage. That’s why we offer a comprehensive portfolio of IT services to ensure our customers’ IT infrastructure stays stable and secure.
Our IT Service Administrators play an especially important role by rolling out system updates, doing on-site checks on the customer’s system and constantly analyzing the IT workload and performance. But that’s not all this exciting job entails! By the way, you can find all our open jobs here.
Caroline Zojer has been an IT Service Administrator at KNAPP for three years, and she’s loved her job since day one. She’s the perfect person to show us what a day in the life of an IT service administrator is like and to share what makes her job so exciting and eventful.
Caroline Zojer, IT Service Administrator, International Customer Service
What are your main responsibilities as an IT Service Administrator?
Caroline: As an IT Service Administrator, I’m responsible for maintaining servers for our customers’ systems, which includes rolling out updates and doing on-site checks on our customers’ systems around the world. I check their entire IT infrastructure and also update and back up their operating system or firmware. The check ends with the customer getting a report that includes everything from the check.
And as an IT expert, I’m an important liaison for our customers in the complex world of IT services. Working together closely is important for IT services, and that’s where I come in. I provide consultation, suggest potential optimizations and even provide training for our customers so they’re always up to date.
What requirements are there for this job? (education, previous knowledge, interests)
Caroline: Vocational training in IT is definitely an advantage, whether you’ve
- completed an apprenticeship,
- graduated from a secondary technical school
- or HTL, or finished university with a degree in IT.
In general, the more experience and expertise you have working with networks, servers and virtualizations, the better. We’re a motley team of IT nerds and we love having new people join our team!
Another important requirement for working as an IT Service Administrator is being willing to travel. We work with customers all around the world, so potential admins should be open-minded, communicative, flexible and, above all, customer-oriented. Communication is also really important to our job, so good German and English skills are a must. Other languages will help you stand out, too. In short, if you’re crazy about IT, if you’re always ready for your next adventure and if you love getting to know different cultures, you’ve got all the boxes checked for a successful career as an IT Service Administrator at KNAPP!
What does an average day at work look like?
Caroline: My job is pretty eventful, so I can’t really describe one typical, average day – each day brings a new challenge. One day, I’ll be in the office, working independently on planning my next appointments with our customer and organizing my trip or doing analyses. The next day, I’ll be on my way to visit a customer.
Working on site for our customers is also very exciting. No two visits are alike, and there’s always something different to do. Since my business trips take me all around the world, I get to know different cultures and different ways of working. Where the systems are located also varies a lot by country. All that means I’m never bored! The job is always exciting. Of course, there are surprises too. One visit to a customer might go smoothly, while some sort of unforeseeable problem might happen at another, like an error during a check. But all that is what makes this job so interesting and so exciting.
I’ve also got a great team of colleagues who always have my back. We all work together to provide the best support we can for our customers.
In your opinion, why does this job have good prospects for the future?
Caroline: IT system security is important for companies around the world, not just here in Graz or Austria. And since IT service administration is something you can do all around the world, not just at one specific location, the job has great prospects for the future.
Especially now, with digitalization and cybercrime both on the rise, keeping systems up to date and safe from threats is tremendously important. No company wants to deal with the fallout from a cyberattack, and that’s why IT service admins are in high demand.
What do you like most about your job? And what challenges you?
Caroline: I really like being able to work independently. I’m responsible for planning visits to customers and for providing our IT service products. That leads me to the next thing I really like about my job: traveling.
