More than 130 pupils and students waited excitedly last Friday for their programming task at the 8th KNAPP coding contest at the KNAPP headquarters in Hart bei Graz. After more than two hours of intense coding, the two winners in the categories “pupil” and “student” were awarded prize money of 1,000 euros each.

Pupils and students travelled to Hart bei Graz to participate in the one-of-a-kind competition at KNAPP AG from all over Austria and even Germany. The great news this year? More women are participating – 10 women took the challenge of the complex coding task. “We are really curious about what the task will be,” they declared excitedly. This time, the programming task was about online trade in the fashion and textiles sector. A so-called pocket sorter is used to efficiently and quickly process various types of articles. The software that the participants programmed was to optimize the control system of the pocket sorter.

Software development – a sector with a bright future in logistics

“Logistics has a bright future with exciting career prospects. Through the KNAPP coding contest, pupils and students who will complete IT programmes become interested early on for IT jobs in our company,” declared Ingo Spörk, HR Manager at KNAPP AG. With over 1,000 employees in IT and software, KNAPP is one of the region’s largest IT employers. KNAPP software specialists keep their finger on the pulse and continually develop innovative software product lines. Custom-tailored software solutions are paramount to successful logistics processes.

Lucky winner and chill-out party

After two intense hours of programming work and a laid-back party with beer and burgers, the winner was finally announced. The winners of the 8th KNAPP coding contest were Lorenz Stechauner from the HTL Rennweg and Florian Riedl from the TU Graz.
All things considered, all the participants were winners. The solution to the programming task is a valuable experience as well as an opportunity to get acquainted with KNAPP. Many used the chance to rub shoulders with the KNAPP software experts and to get tips for starting a career.
